Hiring the right DJ!
The DJ Industry is made up of three types or levels of talent. The first is Entry Level This is the one who advertises really low rates, most likely has a sloppy appearance, very little skills in public speaking, interacting with the crowd and most importantly the proper wedding etiquette.
The above DJ is advertising his service for $300. He has some really nice and expensive gear but it's appearance says a lot about his experience. Eventually he will need to get a case and house all his gear and eliminate all those messy wires. You wouldn't want this at a nice country club or hotel. If he did 40 events a year at $300 he would gross $12,000. That would barely cover his equipment and music costs. He's obviously doing this as a hobby. highly recommended DJ in Knoxville, TN and Tampa Bay, Florida Next is The Service DJ The service DJ is "The Most Popular" and makes up the largest segment. Most cases, these are your bigger companies with several DJ's working Part time. They will show up on time, dress nicely, handle all the announcements and do a nice job. Their talents will vary across the board. Some will be good in some areas and weak in others. Examples are: great personalities but no mixing or one who loves new music but lacks programming in other genres. $500 to $900 is the range in our Tampa Bay. Most brides will consult with their DJ over the phone or at the local Starbucks. The person hiring this DJ will most times be happy but some of their guests who have attended several weddings will notice that they all seem the same. If you have attended a wedding and left early... you know what we mean. Most wedding vendors refer these types. And Finally... The Best of the best Your top level DJ's are those who have been around for a long time and know that if you aren't improving your skill, you become stale. They have invested heavily in schooling, conferences and seminars to keep their talent fresh. Their events aren't generic or your typical run of the mill receptions. Every event they do will be unique and personalized. Every detail from the when the doors open up to the ballroom until you leave to go back to your hotel room will be carefully thought out, well planned and executed in away that will leave you and your guests saying it was the best reception ever! They will also have the very best in pro gear and most likely be a career DJ. In Tampa Bay, prices range from $1295 to $2900 although it is not uncommon for some to spend upwards of $5K. Final Thoughts
Everyone involved in planning your wedding always tells you, “Don't skimp here!” Ultimately, most couples have to cut somewhere. We recommend that you make your budget cuts based on the importance you place on that service. If you believe, as we do, that the entertainment is responsible for a large share of the success of your event, then plan accordingly. Limited Openings
