Hats off to Excellence in Home care. They jammed out tonight at Maggiono's at Westshore Mall.

A small group (40) but they all stuck together and stayed until the end. The video you are about to watch is one of the guests doing his Michael Jackson dance to Billie Jean. Look closely as he does a jammin' version of the Moonwalk.

Southern Dunes Golf club in Haines City, FL is one of my repeat customers for their annual Christmas Party. This year they wanted Family Feud to add to there Mardi gras theme so I brought out my gameshow podium that has two lighted lockout buttons, score board and microphones. After an hour of QAB (Quality Adult Beverages) they were primed to challenge each other in a couple rounds of trivia.
This game works just like the TV series with questions and answers from the actual show. Some sample questions are:

Name something That Pops
Name a Car that Has An Animal Name

etc..etc....I even added some Jaywalking questions from the jay Leno show.

Now for you bride and grooms...this is a perfect icebreaker at weddings or rehearshals. You could actually do this right after dinner and pit the families or wedding party against each other.

Congratulations to Todd and Julie!!!!

Todd and Julie who are both from knoxville, Tennessee...took the untraditional approach to getting married all the way through the honeymoon. Here's how it all unfolded....On November 7th, 2209 they got married on the beach at The Don Cesar located on St. Petersburg Beach. Only their immediate family flew down to witness the beach ceremony. Todd and Julie then went on their honeymoon to Atlantis in the Bahamas. How cool is that?
While the lovely couple was honeymooning in Atlantis, their parents were getting ready to throw a reception in Tennessee. This is where I come in to play.
The reception took place at The Jubilee Center in Knoxville on the 14th. Approximatley 125 of their friends and family members showed up to express their love for Todd and Julie. The challenging part for Todd and Julie was just getting there. They flew from the Bahamas to Tampa on Friday the 13th, then left Tampa for Knoxville via a stop in Chicago on the 14th. Yes the 14th, the day of their event.

Needless to say...they were both exhausted from all the traveling! They only wanted to dance their first dance song "I Cross My heart" for only 45 seconds. Same thing for the Father Daughter-Groom Mother Dance which was "Isn't She Lovely"

It was a real treat working with Wendy from A Blissful Occasions. She helped with the lineup and many other details of the reception.

Tip #21 Are You Having Kids at Your Wedding?

If so, if you are having a bouquet and garter toss, you might want to consider having a special Teddy Bear toss for the little ones.

Here’s what you do…

Purchase a small Teddy Bear online or if you have kids, raid their closet for a stuffed animal. When it’s time to toss the bouquet, have a separate Teddy Bear toss first for all the kids. Have your DJ invite all the kids up and toss the Teddy Bear; Now to get them to quickly exit the dance floor so you can go ahead with the adult version, tape candy before the event underneath all the tables and have the kids do a scavenger hunt.

Tip #22 Don't Hire a DJ....Until you you read this first

When you hire a photographer, you can see their work. When you look for flowers you can touch and smell them. When it comes to choosing entertainment unless you've already seen them in action, you have no way of knowing what you're getting until the day of. Are you comfortable with that?

A Brief history Lesson: In the early 1980's to become a DJ, you had to have a business license which cost $1200. To get the phone to ring, you needed a yellow page add, to have a yellow page add, you needed a business telephone...all of which cost money. Oh...I forgot to mention you need DJ gear and a music library which could easily top $10,000.

1990's: Deregulation and the Internet forever changed the way we live. The MP3 was invented. High speed Internet was being developed. DJ trade shows were springing up, DJ publications were new, DJ training and courses were becoming available. Electronic manufacturers were developing DJ gear. Becoming a better performer and learning a trade was readily available if you wanted it.

Today Everyone wants to be a DJ. It's sexy, hip and easy to get into. Unfortunately, only a handful "approximately 20% "that's 2 out of 10 DJ's" take it serious enough and run it as a business. How does that effect you? These 20% will invest in training to become better at Emceeing, improv, staging, interactives and more. They will know how to read a crowd, keep the party going, manage the event, offer unique ideas and suggestions over the same old typical standards you're used to seeing. In other words, your event will be much better.
Sadly The other 80% looks at it as an extra source of income. They are only in it for the short term. They can offer low prices because they haven't invested in training, business plan and more than likely downloaded there music for free. FYI...Illegally downloading music not only hurts the professional DJ, but it's stealing from the artists.

The fact that they can offer low prices is appealing in today's economy. Unfortunately, in most cases you're not getting what you think you are getting. I've witnessed first hand many untrained Deejays showing up without any planning only to hack the introductions, have dead air, bad appearance, inability to work the room, no personality, drinking alcohol and more. Sounds like a good deal doesn't it? Unfortunately, more and more brides are opting for the cheaper version thinking they are getting the better deal.

I love my job! When you have a room of 220 people all jamming out and having a blast because of what you're playing...then that is a feeling you just can't describe. It's why I love being a DJ!!!

Brian & Ovie were married August 8th 2009 and had their reception at Teco Plaza. The reception didn't start until 8:00PM so the guests were ready and willing to have a good time upon entering the venue. In fact, there so much energy going on I had the dancefloor jamming before the wedding party arrived.

There were plenty of guests from Pittsburgh so of course they wanted to hear the Steeler Polka. It's amazing when you have out of towners attending a wedding, add alcohol and you have a the ingredients of Amazing Fun!

A few highlights:

One guests started to dance to Michael Jackson - Don't stop Get you Get Enough so I grabbed a white glove from my prop box and he did his best MJ dance and the crowd went nuts! I wish I had a picture!!!!

A conga line started and it was the longest I ever seen. Must of been all 220 in line...again....I wished I had photos. You'll just have to imagine!!!

Congratulation to Christin & Kyle.

They were married July 11th, 2009 in Powell, TN. They had a reception for 230 family and friends at The Jubilee Center in Knoxville.

They met in 8th grade and have been best friends ever since. Now they are Husband and wife.

The wedding party had a suprise for the groom. After all the formalities were done...the girls did a dance routine to 'These boots were made for walking" all choreographed with cowboy boots.

The folks at The Jubilee Banquet Facilty are super nice people. Sharon and her family all did a terrific job. Tip #20 Money saving tips!

Let's face it. Most people hire a DJ/MC after they have spent all their money on everything from flowers to food. When the realization comes that "I need a DJ" they look at the budget and then come to a conclusion that I only have $500 to spend for music. Often times what happens is they opt for settling for an average at best talent or sometimes resort to a friend to perform on the most important day of their life. Sadly, 80% of these same brides surveyed, said if they had to do it all over, they would have placed the entertainment near or at the top of their shopping list.

Folks.... you only have one shot at hitting a home run. If you want an Entertainment Driven reception where EVERYONE DANCES, EVERONE Comments on how much fun they had 6 months after your event, if you want your photos or video to look better than if eveyone is just sitting around, then you owe it to yourself to take a look at some money saving tips so you CAN HAVE THE DJ of YOUR DREAMS.

R U Ready?

Chair Covers:
At a minimum of $4 per chair, a hundred-guest wedding just took $400 out of the budget for an item that, (imho), only makes a visual impact when the room is empty...people arrive and hang their coats over the backs of the chairs and $4 down the drain! They don't make the seats more comfortable and you cannot really see them once people are sitting in them.

Ice 'Sculptures':
First of all, very few of them are really carved anymore, the proper description would be "ice mold". $1000+ for a hunk of ice that they won't even give you a drink large enough to float it in!? Even if you don't use this savings toward the Deejay, then at least upgrade the food choices instead of this melting money waster.

Flowers:
Very few things bring so much to the look of a room or fill a dumpster so quickly! Encourage plants and living arrangements that their guests can take home to enjoy.

Cake:
Does anybody really need a life-size fondant replica of the Bride??? Cakes are meant to be eaten, get a nice one, but ensure that it's edible, appealing and plated early enough for guests to actually enjoy. Keeping the top tier in cold storage for the first anniversary is a cruel joke perpetuated by the former generations who fell for it when they were newlyweds...suggest a gift certificate from the bakery for a 'personal-sized' cake of the same recipe to be baked fresh next year.

Limousines/Carriages:
While it's a special personal moment, and you should pamper yourselves, don't get these things if you're doing it just to show the guests...UNLESS YOU MAKE SURE THE PLAN INCLUDES HAVING THE GUESTS GATHERED WHERE YOU'RE ARRIVING/DEPARTING. Many times, the guests can't see where you pull up from the room, and many B&G's don't make a Grand Exit to a waiting limo, so why have one on the payroll?

Bubbles, Disposable Cameras, Favors:
Nice ideas, but history has taught us that these are simply expensive doodads for the children to monopolize... bubbles rarely get blown at the couple when they arrive or depart as intended, but they do get spilled on the dancefloor/playground with surprising regularity. The idea of your guests capturing that Kodak moment for you is a wonderful dream that rarely sees fruition...but you do get 30 or 40 shots of the same things that the gaggle of kids all run around taking one shot each of! If you must buy favors for the guests, choose wisely considering what YOU would be inclined to take home and cherish if it was given to you.

Mazel Tov Maddy!

Maddy celebrated her Bat Mitzvah February 15th, 2009 at The Hilton in Gainesville.

They were married this past Saturday in Tampa and held their reception at The Italian Club in Ybor city. They are a lovely couple who saw me at a wedding a couple of years ago. Tommy (the groom) was the Best Man at that wedding.

The venue is an awesome place to have a reception. It is an old historic building with lots of character.

Imagine standing in a long line waiting to enter an area to a park that is surrounded by lush green landscape, beautiful lighting and music to keep your toes tapping. When you enter, the first thing you see is a gazebo that you walk through so you can sign ... get this...two electric guitars.

Chad & Cheryl Lucente were married poolside Saturday night 11-8-08 at The Hard Rock Hotel in Tampa. 185 of their closets friends and family members gathered around the poolside to witness the ceremony by a family member. This wasn't your normal or typical wedding setting.

The evening started off with a cocktail hour outside by the pool deck. At 7:00PM, all the guests "with beverages in hand" gathered around poolside for the ceremony. When the ceremony was over, cocktail hour #2 began. If you are a fan of frozen drinks, you had to see the ice sculpture that was on display. I am not exaggerating when I say this thing was 12 feet wide and 10 feet tall with a guitar as a slide to pour the drinks down. The base "all ice" was so big that the bartender was standing on something behind the sculpture so he could perform his magic.

The brides mother from Naples, hired me to be "The DJ/MC" but had a big surprise for me and everyone else when she at the last minute, informed me she had hired a band to play. The biggest surprise about the band is that the lead singer, will be on this seasons American Idol!. How cool is that? The band "High Tolerance" out of Miami is a high energy Rock N Roll band that had the brides dad singing on the mic. Everyone was having a blast!

There were allot of quality professionals working together on this event.

I don't wish for this thread to become an advertisement but, when you work with The Best I strongly feel they deserve praise.

Mary Patterson at The Hard Rock was as easy to work with as anyone I have ever worked with. One thing I see firsthand when working at The hotels is that the coordinators always seem to be walking on eggshells; not so with Mary, she was actually singing along with the band. Way to go Mary!
The photographer - A Fly on the wall photography, definitely deserves her name. Not once did she ever take away from the event by killing the energy asking the DJ or Band to ask everyone off the dance floor for a photo shoot.
CVP Videography is well known throughout the country for their high-end work. I can't wait to see the video.

For 115 years, Chiefs have been tried and tested and have been called upon to be the guiding example for the Navy. what sets “THE CHIEF” apart from other ranks of the service is that chiefs train there own. Even though the training and tactics have been changed throughout the years, the product has remained the same. This group is no different, they have had a long and tiresome past few weeks.

After months of extensive training these guys were chomping at the bit to let loose.

These guys had a blast at there annual party which was held at the Quorum Hotel on Westshore.
We brought in Jan from Drum Magic and her group engaged the crowd in drumming. It's amazing how much rhythm a person has after a few drinks. :)
